Subject: ELC Support for the Graduate School

Hi Ruth and Stacey,

As you know, the ELC has long supported international students, faculty, postdocs, staff, and scholars at the Vanderbilt Graduate School, and Susan and I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you the types of programs and support we offer.

We offer a wide range of services, so for your reference, we've attached a more pared-down, 'clickable' pdf that you might use while advising graduate students to point them toward the exact ELC service they might need. See "grad school resource.pdf" attached and note that you won't see urls on the pdf but clicking the various boxes or blocks of text on the pdf will take you to the right spot on our website.

All International Graduate Students

Our primary programming consists of the courses we offer through our English for Academic and Professionals (EAP) program which address the specific academic writing and speaking needs through Academic Speaking, Academic Writing, and Pronunciation courses.

We also offer an annual series of Academic Workshops covering Networking, Emailing, Elevator Speeches, Responding to Feedback, Small Talk and aspects of Dissertation writing and defense. All of these topics focus on the types of cultural and language contexts that students, faculty, staff, and scholars with advanced English language proficiency can find challenging to navigate. Participant feedback indicates these engaging workshops are highly useful to their contexts.

In addition to courses and workshops, we also provide 1-to-1 Speaking and Writing Consultations. Participants find these helpful when preparing proposals, research drafts, and presentations. These sessions may also be accessed online so that individuals may have the opportunity to participate from wherever they may be conducting research.

International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) We serve International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) and their departments by offering language assessments and making recommendations for continued support. Many of the ITAs we assess place into a course we created specifically for them: ITA Communication.

Faculty

Our courses are open to all VU community members, but it is not always ideal to have students and faculty members taking the same courses together. For this reason, we also offer Effective Teaching Strategies for International Faculty. This seminar helps international faculty members hone their instructional skills for the US university classroom context.

Resources

We have been creating a repository of resources that include support for practical skills-such as Scholarly Reading, Vocabulary development, and Emailing-in addition to support for campus initiatives. In fact, if you have any existing materials or programming for students that you think we could supplement for international students, please let us know.

Finally, we would like to highlight that we can support exchanges, research and otherwise, with other universities through the programs we have indicated above. For short term or for support at a distance, 1-to-1 consultations may be arranged.

Again, we realize our services are extensive, so please let us know if you have any questions or would like to discuss these options further.

Talk to you soon.
